If you’re not using videos in your marketing, it’s time you start thinking about it. Texts and images are great. Digital marketers have been using them for a long time and seeing worthwhile results.
But video content is the KING right now.
Are you ready to compete on the web?
It’s simple:
Invest in video marketing.
I searched the web to find 40 video marketing statistics from reputable research firms.
In this article, I talk about each stat and what it means for your business and the future of digital marketing.
Stat 1: 78% of people watch online videos every week, and 55% view online videos every day.
A study found that 78% of web users are watching videos every week. The same study also found that 55% of web users view online videos every day.
These show that video is not only the future. Video is now.
When you share interesting videos with your prospects, they’ll keep coming back for more.
Over half of web users love videos.
That means, your prospects love videos. And that’s why you should invest in video marketing.
Stat 2: By 2020, online videos will make up more than 80% of all consumer internet traffic (85% in the US).
The year 2020 is close and it seems like videos will make up 80% of all consumer internet traffic by then.
In videos, you can showcase your product or explain your service in a way you will never be able to do in text.
More and more consumers will continue to rely heavily on videos when purchasing decisions.
Stat 3: YouTube is the second most trafficked site, after Google.
Google is the biggest search engine in the world.
Next is YouTube. YouTube is a search engine too. It’s a search engine where people find video content.
Both are owned by the same company.
Just as prospects find your site on the Google search engine, they’ll find you on YouTube too.
So, get on YouTube. Create and upload video content on the platform.
Stat 4: One minute of video is worth 1.8 million words.
According to Forrester Research, one minute of video is worth 1.8 million words.
I believe that.
Marketers often say that an image is worth 1,000 words.
In a one-minute video, you can show several images and use words along the way. That’s valuable to consumers. It helps them get your points quicker while saving them a lot of time.
Most people understand complex topics after watching videos.
Stat 5: In the past 30 days, more online video content has been uploaded to the web than the past 30 years of TV content.
TV used to be the only way most people see live images. That changed when the web was born and video became popular on the web.
Now you can watch amazing live images right there on your computer.
People are uploading video content on the web every second.
There are lots of video content in the past 30 days than we have available in the past 30 years of TV.
That should tell you how popular online videos are right now. You can reach more people through online videos than you could on TV.
Stat 6: Users view more than 500 million hours of video each day on YouTube.
This stat revealed to Business Insider by Google CEO, Sundar Pichai clearly shows that a lot of video lovers visit YouTube.
The stat was revealed by Pichai in February 2016. I have no doubt that the number has since increased.
YouTube users are spending more time on the platform watching videos than anywhere else online.
That’s why your business should be there.
Stat 7: 59% of executives say they would rather watch a video than read texts.
Executives are extremely busy people. They don’t have time to read long articles.
Videos are much faster to watch than when you read text.
For example, you could watch a video content that reveals key information or skill you want to know within five minutes. A text version of the same content could take 40 minutes to consume.
Executives don’t have that time. They’ll rather watch videos.
Stat 8: 55% of people pay close attention when consuming videos — more than all other types of content.
I love text content. They help you rank high in Google.
However, most people don’t really read text content. They skim.
It’s easy to fall asleep while reading text content, especially the boring ones.
But when you’re watching a video? You’re mostly alive, paying close attention each second of the video.
If you want to capture potential customers’ attention on your sales page, use video. Most prospects are likely to watch every second of the video than read each word on your sales page.
Stat 9: Viewers retain 95% of a message when they watch it in a video, compared to 10% when reading it in text.
I hardly remember everything after reading a text content. It’s difficult for me to learn a complex skill through text alone.
Sometimes, I had to read and re-read many times before I really get the point.
It isn’t that difficult when you learn with video.
In a video, you can watch every action and remember most things. When you come across the same problem you saw, you would know what next to do because you’ve seen it before.
You remember what you see more than what you read.
If you want to teach prospects how to perform a skill, I highly recommend that you use video. It’s easier for them to remember and follow the exact steps you took when you use video.
Stat 10: 51% of all video plays are on mobile devices.
The growth of mobile devices is one of the reasons videos are so popular today.
Because of these incredible mobile devices, web users can now watch videos everywhere. You can watch a video in a restaurant, at a salon, on your way to work – anywhere.
A little above half of video content is played on mobile devices.
Use videos in your email newsletters, social media accounts, YouTube, sales pages, landing pages, blog posts – everywhere.
Stat 11: Almost one-third of internet users, over one billion people are on YouTube
According to YouTube, over one billion people use its platform. That’s one-third of web users.
YouTube isn’t just another platform on the web. It’s a platform you should make a home.
Your website may be your main digital home, but you should have another home on YouTube.
Create a YouTube channel. And start publishing videos your target audience wants to watch.
By neglecting YouTube, you miss out on reaching over one billion people in the world.
Stat 12: 100 million hours of video watched per day on Facebook.
Not just YouTube. Facebook is another digital platform where web users are watching videos.
Each day, Facebook users watch 100 million hours of video on the site.
You can get your share of these video views by creating interesting videos for the biggest social media site in the world.
Create a fan page or profile page where Facebook users can interact with you. Create videos and share them with your followers on a regular basis.
Stat 13: 45% of people watch more than an hour of Facebook or YouTube videos a week.
YouTube and Facebook are two major platforms web users discover video content.
YouTube is the second biggest search engine in the world. Facebook is the biggest social media platform on the web. They are both high-trafficked sites.
At least, 45% of web users who visit these sites per week spend more than an hour watching videos.
If 45% of people can spend over sixty minutes of their valuable time each week watching videos on these sites, that shows the reason you should upload videos on these platforms.
Some videos that work on Facebook may not work for YouTube, and vice versa. If you have to create videos for these platforms separately, you should do that.
Stat 14: 500 million people watch Facebook videos every day.
Facebook has about 2 billion monthly active users. One-fourth of them watch videos on the platform each day.
Facebook users like videos – especially interesting ones.
If you want to keep your relationship with prospects going strong, use Facebook videos. Prospects will keep sharing your videos with their friends if they find them helpful.
Stat 15: Social video generates 1200% more shares than text and image content combined.
Today, videos are the most powerful form of content on social media. Videos get more attention and generate 1,200% more shares than text and image content combined.
If you’re looking for a content format that’s highly effective on social media, videos are the right way to go.
Stat 16: 60% of marketers used videos in their social media marketing in 2016.
Social media users like videos. They prefer watching videos than reading texts and viewing images.
Most marketers and businesses have realized that they need videos to capture and keep the attention of their fans on social media platforms.
That’s why, today, 60% of marketers use videos on social media.
If 60% of marketers are already using video on social media, it shows how important video has become. It means you’ll be competing with many businesses that have already started before you do.
Stat 17: Facebook videos receive 135% more organic reach on average than a Facebook photo.
You need to be at wherever your customers are online. And Facebook is that place they spend time online.
The best way to get prospects to interact with your brand on Facebook is to share videos on a regular basis.
Photos perform better than texts on Facebook. But videos are even more effective than photos.
Facebook videos receive 135% more organic reach on average than Facebook photos.
You need videos to reach fans on Facebook.
Stat 18: 82% of Twitter users watch video content on Twitter.
Twitter is one of my favorite social media platforms. You get developing news. Updates are short and to the point. And you can participate in active discussions.
Twitter users like videos. According to Twitter, 82% of Twitter users watch video content on the platform.
Videos can help you compete for attention on Twitter. So, if you want to get some attention from Twitter users, create videos.
Stat 19: Snapchat users watch 10 billion videos each day.
Snapchat is the most popular social media platform among American teenagers.
If your ideal customers are teens, Snapchat is the platform you should be.
Snapchat users love videos.
They watch a staggering 10 billion videos each day.
Of course, these teenagers will grow to become into matured adults, and many of them may continue to use the platform.
So, Snapchat is the best platform to develop a strong relationship with today’s teenagers as they continue to become matured internet users.
Create exciting videos and post them on Snapchat. Many teenagers will love them and share it with their friends.
Stat 20: In 2016, the time Instagram users spent watching videos increased by more than 40 percent.
As you already know, Instagram started out as an image-only platform. The quality images posted on the platform attracted a lot of image lovers.
Instagram is more than just images today. Videos are now part of Instagram.
When videos were launched on the platform, they were well received by Instagram users.
In 2016, the time Instagram users spent watching videos on the platform increased by more than 40%. And it should continue to increase in the future.
Get on Instagram. Create short, interesting videos and share them with people.
Stat 21: Including video on landing pages can increase conversion rates by 80%.
Businesses create landing pages to collect prospects’ email addresses. A landing page is where you turn a visitor into a lead.
For example, here’s a landing page of an insurance agency that offers services in California, New York, and Texas
You may offer a potential lead a free offer, or free trial to make them give you their email address faster. But most times, promising something valuable for free isn’t enough to convince visitors.
Web users don’t want another marketer sending them emails.
Including a video on your landing page that explains your product or service, and even shows your face helps visitors connect better with you and give you their email addresses.
That’s why including a video on landing pages increase conversion rates by 80% for most businesses that have tried it.
Include a video on your landing page instead of just texts. Then ask people to give you their email address.
For example, Basecamp includes a video on their landing page.
For example, Circle Surrogacy has videos on some of their landing pages. A prospect is more likely to sign up to become a surrogate, egg donor, or parent after watching a video on the site.
Stat 22: Nearly 50% of internet users look for videos related to a product or service before visiting a store.
According to Google, 50% of internet users want to watch a video about a product or service before buying it.
It shows how important videos are to internet users when making a purchase. Through videos, consumers can learn things they wouldn’t know about a product or service if they’d read texts alone.
Invest in videos if you want to make it easy for internet users to buy your products or services.
Stat 23: Shoppers who view demo videos are 1.81 times more likely to make a purchase than non-viewers.
A demo (or demonstration) video is a video where you show how your product or service can be used.
Demo videos are common in the SaaS industry. And the reason is that software can be complex to use.
Allowing potential customers to view demo videos make it easier for them to buy. The video allows prospects to see how your product or service works.
Businesses that sell physical products can create demo videos too and put them on their sales pages.
Visitors who watch your demo videos are 1.81 times more likely to buy your product or service than non-viewers.
Stat 24: Searches related to “how to” on YouTube have grown 70% year on year.
Many internet users turn to YouTube when they want to learn how to do something they haven’t done before.
Men search for how to change their babies’ diapers. Women search for how to cook.
There are searches like “how to decorate your bedroom,” “how to remove wallpaper,” and “how to make a tasty fried chicken.”
People search for how to perform any skill these days.
Watching a video is the best and fastest way to learn how to perform a skill on the internet. And as you know, YouTube is the home of online videos.
Searches related to “how to” on YouTube are growing 70% each passing year.
Instead of asking someone how to perform a simple task, you can simply turn to YouTube.
“How to” searches are only going to continue increasing as people rely more and more on the web.
So, what should you do?
Create lots of “how to” videos related to your products and services and post them on YouTube. You’ll attract many potential customers to your business when you do that.
Some “how to” videos on how to cook tasty fried chicken have received millions of views on YouTube.
Stat 25: 4 times as many consumers would rather watch a video about a product, rather than read about it.
Reading takes more time than watching. There are some words you’ll miss when reading. There are some sentences you won’t understand.
You’re more likely to get bored too. Put your customers in your shoes.
They too will rather watch a video about a product than read about it.
Stat 26: Companies that use videos in their marketing have 27% higher click-through rates and 34% higher conversion rates than those that don’t.
Not every company out there is using videos in their marketing. But companies that use videos in their marketing enjoy 27% higher click-through rates and 34% higher conversion rates than those that don’t.
One of the excuses business owners give for not using videos in their marketing is that it’s too expensive. I believe otherwise.
It’s become amazingly cheap to shoot videos. You can shoot high-quality videos with an iPhone or Android device.
High-quality cameras are cheap.
The price of cameras and smartphones devices are far less than the profits you’ll reap from using video in your marketing.
You can shoot videos yourself. You can employ a team of experts to take care of video production and editing for you.
No matter the way you choose to go, the benefits far outweigh the costs.
Stat 27: 80% of users can recall a video ad that they viewed in the last 30 days.
Video advertisements are more interesting to watch than pure texts.
Some video ads are more than just ads. You learn things you don’t know before after watching some of them.
Some video ads make you laugh just like those funny ones you see on TV.
We’re exposed to an average of 5,000 ads per day, but video ads tend to stick in our memory.
I don’t know about you, but I can remember some interesting video ads I’ve seen in the past years. These videos were really exciting when I saw them. I’m sure you could name a few interesting video ads you’ve seen too.
But on average, according to a study, 80% of web users recall a video ad they saw in the last 30 days.
Whether the video ad was interesting or not, people are still more likely to remember seeing it, at least, within a 30-day period.
If people can recall a video ad in 30 days, it means they’ll likely remember the brand behind it.
The ability of a video to make prospects recall your brand can help you sell more products and services.
So, get into video advertising. Run video ads on platforms like YouTube and Facebook. People are watching videos on these sites. And they remember the brands they see in those videos.
Stat 28: 52% of marketers say video is the type of content with the best ROI.
You may have heard or seen this phrase many times before:
“Content is king.”
It’s because it’s true.
Content is everywhere on the internet. Web users can’t stop consuming content.
Businesses create and publish content to communicate with prospects and customers.
But you should want to know the kind of content that provides the best return on investment (ROI) for you.
Video is that content.
According to a survey, 52% of marketers say video is the type of content with the best ROI.
Video gives you the returns you won’t get from other content types.
That’s why you should invest in video content than others.
Stat 29: Using the word “video” in an email subject line was found to increase open rates by 19% and clickthrough rates by 65%.
Emails are the key to selling to the same people over and over again.
Without emails, you can’t reach prospects and convert them into customers.
You need emails to sell online.
But collecting customers’ emails alone isn’t enough to sell to them once or many times.
There are lots of businesses competing for that same customer’s attention in their inbox.
So, you’ve got to be a smart marketer to have the attention of the customer each time you send them an email.
One of the best ways to get people to open your emails is to add videos to them and include the word “video” in the subject lines.
You may also include a link to the video if you don’t want to attach it to the email message. You’ll be able to avoid sending large files when you do that.
Including the word “video” in the subject line of your email will increase your open rate by an average of 19%. You’ll also enjoy a higher click-through rate of 65%.
Stat 30: 65% of executives have navigated to a vendor’s site, and 39% have called a vendor after watching a marketing video.
Executives are the biggest fans of videos.
Video saves them a lot of time. And it helps them understand a product or service quicker than when they read texts.
Executives consider marketers that utilize videos as more serious for their purchases.
About 65% of executives will visit the vendor’s site after watching a video. And 39% will call the vendor.
Stat 31: 70% of U.S. marketers plan to use social video ads in the next 12 months.
Above, I mentioned a stat that shows that videos generate more shares than text and image.
Many marketers know the power of videos on social media. And that’s the reason why they plan to invest more in it.
Expect costs for social video ads to rise very quickly. Although competition isn’t a bad thing, you can jump big in social media video marketing now before your competitors do to gain a massive advantage.
Invest a lot in social video ads to build a solid audience for your business on social media.
Stat 32: Blog posts that incorporate video attract three times as many inbound links as blog posts without video.
Text will continue to be an important part of digital marketing.
You need text to rank high in search engines like Google and Bing. These search engines can’t read images. They rely on text to learn what an image is about.
You also need text to create a video. You need to create an outline or write a script for your video. So, text isn’t going anywhere.
Continue publishing those blog posts.
But, instead of publishing text alone, include videos in your blog posts. You increase the quality of your blog posts when you do that.
Blog posts help people find your business. Videos inside those blog posts help them stay around.
Blog posts that contain high-quality videos in them are highly-rated by prospects. They rate them higher than blog posts without videos.
Because of this reason, blog posts with videos attract three times more inbound backlinks than blog posts without.
More backlinks to your blog posts means higher rankings in search engines.
So, create videos to include in your blog posts.
Stat 33: Video ads have an average clickthrough rate of 1.84%, the highest of all digital ad formats.
Internet users love video ads.
They are less intrusive than other types of digital ad formats.
You don’t find them everywhere on a web page.
Web users are more likely to watch a video ad than click on a text ad.
Users don’t necessarily have to click a link in a video. They just watch.
And if they are not happy with the video, they simply skip it within the first 5 seconds.
I tend to watch video ads because they are less annoying than other forms of ads. I rarely click on text ads.
Most text and image ads suck because advertisers don’t put in a lot of thoughts and creativity into most of them.
Stat 34: Brands that use video marketing grow their year-over-year revenue 49% faster than brands that don’t.
Videos are so effective that they can quickly make a huge positive impact on the bottom line.
Brand like Ascendant that use video grew their revenue much faster than brands that don’t.
Shoppers like videos. It helps them make better buying decisions than they would with text content. That’s why I recommend videos to anyone who wants to grow their business very quickly.
Stat 35: On average, people spend 2.6x more time on pages with video than without.
Do you want people to spend more time reading your pages than competitors?
The answer to that is very simple:
Add videos to your pages.
Add videos to your blog posts, sales pages, landing pages, and home pages. When you do that, you get more people to spend more time on your site.
People spend 2.6x more time on pages with video than those without.
If people are spending more time on pages with video, they are more likely to convert into customers because they’ve invested their valuable time on the page.
You can add videos to pages that receive the most traffic and convert more visitors than others.
Stat 36: Before reading any text, 60% of site visitors will watch a video if one is available.
If you have the option to choose between watching a video or reading a long text on a page, you’re likely to choose video. The reason why is because video content is easier to consume than text.
You relax and just watch the video. That’s all you have to do. With text, you have to do more than that.
According to a stat, 60% of site visitors will watch a video before reading text if one is available.
Add videos to your pages. Make sure they are very high on your page.
Stat 37: 53% of smartphone users feel more favorable towards companies whose mobile sites or apps provide instructional video content.
Most internet users have smartphones they use to surf the internet.
Watching a video on a smartphone is even easier. It means you can watch video anywhere you are. You don’t have to be at home, or in your office to watch a video.
Smartphone users love companies that provide instructional video content than others that don’t.
If lots of mobile users visit your site, it means video is necessary for you. According to a study, 53% of smartphone users will become more favorable toward your site when you use videos.
Stat 38: 85% of Facebook videos are watched without sound.
Above, I mentioned why Facebook is a big social media platform you shouldn’t ignore. Over 2 billion people use the platform monthly.
Facebook users love videos. But the most interesting thing about the site is that a whopping 85% of Facebook videos are watched without sound.
What should you do after learning about this stat?
Create videos that are interesting without sound. Include captions.
Stat 39: 33% of viewers will stop watching a video after 30 seconds, 45% by one minute, and 60% by two minutes.
Videos are great. They are effective.
But people don’t spend their entire day in front of screens watching videos. They have other important things to do.
The first 30 seconds are important. And the first minute is the most important because, by then, you’ve lost almost half of your viewers.
Put all the important stuff in the first 30 seconds of the video. Doing that ensures that half of the viewers see your messages before leaving the video.
Stat 40: Nearly two-thirds of consumers prefer video under 60 seconds.
Another study showed that people prefer videos that aren’t more than a minute. To know that a video isn’t that long feels great.
I rarely watch videos that are over 5 minutes. I’m a pretty busy person. Unless I’m taking a short break from work. That’s the only time I watch videos that last several minutes.
Most of your viewers don’t want long videos. They want short videos.
Giving it to them means you’ll get their attention before they start watching. And as a result, they are more likely to share your video after watching it.
