10 Best Shopify Themes: Choosing the Perfect Design for Your Shopify Store

Apple has made design impossible to ignore for companies, startups and e-commerce stores.

Design is law at Apple.

Mark Kawano, former Apple senior designer and user experience evangelist, says “every engineer at Apple knows how to think like a designer.”

Just look at the Apple website.

Companies like GitHub, Airbnb, Square have made their sites incredibly attractive and simple at the same time.

Think back to the last time you bought something online.

Was the website attractive?

Probably not because you didn’t think about it too much.

We don’t pay much attention to design.

We read content.

Search for the products we want.

The design of the site didn’t demand much attention because we love it anyway.

Now, imagine landing on an ugly-looking site.

Or, it’s difficult to find what you’re looking for on the site.

What do you do?

You become frustrated and leave.

You abandon buying from the site before you reach the cart.

Consumers don’t have to be designers before they know a site was badly-designed.

If you want online shoppers to buy from your store, you need an appealing theme.

1. Icon

Icon is the perfect choice if you’re looking to leverage visuals on your Shopify store.

According to an ROI research report, 44% of people are more likely to engage with brands that post pictures than any other media.

In marketing and adverting, nothing is more vital than imagery.

When there’s no opportunity to feel, smell, taste and touch a product, shoppers turn to images to judge the quality of a product or service.

Established brands like Apple, Google, Walmart, AT&T, and Coca-Cola use images in their marketing.

Images help them sell.

That is why I recommend a Shopify theme like Icon.

Icon lets you create a unique feel on your Shopify store.

The Icon Shopify theme has two more styles to it:

Just like Icon, Retina lets you showcase your products with bold imagery and refined styling.

This Shopify theme costs $180. I recommend it.

3. Pipeline

Pipeline is a minimalist design with parallax effect scrolling.

One of the fastest ways to create a great first impression is to create an animated depth effect as shoppers scroll down your page.

This theme comes with three design styles:

  1. Bright
  2. Dark
  3. Light

This theme is an ideal for stores selling men’s products.

You can use the design to store a large number of products.

Pipeline is optimized for large images.

Here’s what one Shopify user has to say about Pipeline:

“As others have mentioned, the support is first rate and no issue too small. The theme is extremely versatile, and the support page is full of really useful code changes that you don’t need to be a coder to understand. I feel it takes the pain of day to day e-commerce away, so you can focus purely on how to drive traffic and sales.”

Oakland Surf Club currently uses the theme for their store.

Below is the demo of the Bright style version of the Pipeline Shopify theme.

With this theme, you can create a beautiful and long homepage.

You can also re-order your products, blog posts, or promotional content however you want them on your homepage.

Symmetry gives you 100% freedom to customize your design to meet your needs.

One of my favorite online swim shops, Bikinibird uses Symmetry on their site, and it looks really nice.

The theme creators also offer reliable customer support.

Symmetry may be expensive at $180, but it gives you value you wouldn’t get from cheaper themes.

The theme offers three design styles:

Here’s what one Furniture Shop owner has to say about the theme.

“Highly recommended!

We picked the Showtime Furnishing because we are a Furniture Business and we are very happy about it!

The layout was exactly what we were looking for, and the few changes I made was throughout the Support Team.

They are very responsive with detailed explanations and screenshots which make it very easy to add the new codes at the right location. Awesome theme!”

8. Grid

Grid is a masonry-style theme, perfect for contemporary brands with a story to tell.

Don’t get confused.

Masonry-layout is referred to as the Pinterest Layout style. The reason for that name is because Pinterest was the first major site to use this layout style.

Grid allows you to feature multiple products, posts, or promotions in a masonry-style layout.

Here’s a screenshot of a live demo of the Shopify Grid theme.

The theme has an Instagram gallery hover effect feature that reveals the number of likes and comments your Instagram posts received when you hover over an image.

It also offers a quick link contact bar where you can display contact information, store hours and location with a stylish set of icons.

Stores that are using Handy?

Rudy Jude is a children fashion store, and the site uses Handy as its theme.

The theme is available for $180. That is cheap for a theme that offers one of the best mobile experience to shoppers.

10. Masonry.

If Grid is a masonry-style theme, Masonry is modern, masonry-style design.

This Shopify theme puts your store front and center.

Masonry has four styles:

  1. Chameleon
  2. Flamingo
  3. Dragonfly
  4. Coyote

Masonry features multiple products, posts, or promotions in a masonry-style layout.

(Note: I explained the meaning of masonry style above in Grid).

The theme also has infinite scrolling. That means, products automatically load on the same page as shoppers scroll down the page.

A beauty therapy service, BatYourLash, uses Masonry on its site and it looks nice.

The theme costs $180. Considering the value Masonry offers any store, the price is worth it.
